In-Line Process Control and Heat Treatment

Our Orbit system is a circular indexing table on which the springs are placed. The springs can be rotated to various stations where work is
carried out by various accessories.

The control system for heating detects whether has been fulfilled or failed. If it for some reason has failed, the spring is marked as bad and sorted out. If there are 3 consecutive failures, the system is closed down and an error code is displayed on the display.

Heat Treatment

When springs are coiled, stress is built up inside the wire. The built in stress might make the springs collapse once it has started to work and the original force will soon start to decline. To prevent this from happening many springs are heat treated and thereby normalized before use.

The conventional way to heat treat springs is to put the springs in a heating furnace. This method however, is time consuming, requires extra equipment and forces the user to find a way of feeding the springs to the end product. With our heat treatment method, these problems are eliminated. Furthermore the quality of the end product will be improved by ensuring a longer lifetime for the springs and reducing the scrap rate.

The heat treatment option can be used in-line with both the pneumatic and CNC-based coilers. This means that the springs are coiled, heat treated, delivered and assembled automatically without any need of manual handling. Furthermore the process is designed in such a way that each spring is heat treated in tenths of a second.

The Method

Our heat treatment method is patented and is the only one that uses resistive heating to heat treat springs. A controlled electrical current is fed through the spring which is then heated to approximately 350 C.

Spring Testing

We offer a wide range of testing and control options designed to make sure that the manufactured springs fulfil the requirements that the customer has. This is done by measuring each and every spring directly after it has been manufactured. The results are then used to sort out any springs that for some reason are outside the set tolerances as well as send information back to the coiler to increase or decrease certain parameters.

All post manufacturing options except for the Diameter Check unit are placed in the Orbit.

Length Control

The Length Control option measures the free length of each spring and sorts out the springs that are found to be too long or too short. The Length Control does not work with real values.

Load Control


The load Control unit effectively measures the load of each spring. The load is calculated by registering the weight of the spring while it is compressed to a specific length. Any spring that does not fulfil the load requirements is sorted out. The Load Control unit works with a real value.

Length Check

The Length Check unit is set up to compare each manufactured spring to the required free length. If the spring is found to be too short, this information is sent back to the coiler that will make the next spring a bit longer. If the spring is too long the next one will be made shorter. The Length Check unit always strives to reach a preset spring length. The Length Check option can only be used together with a CNC-based coiler.

Diameter Check

The Diameter Check works in the same way as the Length Check but measures the spring's outside diameter instead of the free length. Apart from the possibility to send back information to the coiler to adjust the diameter of the next spring, the Diameter Check unit has the possibility to sort out springs that are outside the set tolerances. The Diameter Check option is only available if cylindrical or concave spring is manufactured. The diameter Check works with real values.
